If it has come to that time of year where you’re looking to switch your decor, then there’s a few things that you need to know first.
For those of you that follow my Instagram, you’ll have seen my most recent post about changing my mantelpiece decor. We all get bored with our decor. I’m always buying new things with absolutely no idea of where they’ll go. But eventually I find a place. And then another place. And then another place.
Decor has to be delicate. Finding the right home items is a process that’s never easy, especially for indecisive women like me. thought out so that your home looks absolutely perfect.
So, when it does come to finding new decor, you want to make sure you’re doing it right. I’ve got a few pointers that should help you do just that when you want to switch your decor.
Are You Swapping Furniture?
Furniture should last a long time. A solid wood coffee table could easily last 10 years. But it’s whether we want it to. I know I couldn’t cope seeing the same furniture for 10 years. So when it comes to switching your decor, furniture is one to be careful with.
You need to first think about why you want to swap the furniture.
If it’s because it’s old and doesn’t have the flare it once used to, debate whether you can up-cycle it. If it’s a coffee table, this could be a fun little project for you, and it could save you a lot of money. The same goes for something like a wooden bed frame, outdoor furniture etc.
But, if you’re looking to get new chairs or sofas, then it’s time to buy something new.
However, don’t get over excited and buy the first piece you see. You have to be careful in your search to switch your decor.
Some companies are charging an absolute fortune for furniture that isn’t even going to last you a year. Some companies, however, are selling luxurious furniture that could last you a lifetime if you treat it right. I have fallen in love with these dining chairs by my-furniture. They’re classic in style and would last years if treated right.
If you were to get new dining room chairs, you might as well make it a set and get a table as well. If you’re redecorating, you want everything to be new and interesting so that you don’t have to make any changes again for a while.
Maybe you’re looking for a new sofa. If it is, then the biggest decision you’re going to have to make is whether to go leather or not. It’s up to you, and what you would find most comfortable. I regret our sofa, and am already budgeting to buy another one that I like more, and we’ve only had it around 18 months.
You don’t want to clash with your colours at all. You want them to flow, you want them to look good, and you want them to be modern.
But, it’s not always easy to find the colours you want. It’s so easy to get bored of the colours we’ve chosen just a few months down the line. So, to make sure that you’re getting the most up-to-date styles, and you know it’s something that you’re going to be happy with for a long time to come, you’re going to have to find something that stands out to you.
You’ve got two options to do this. You can look at websites such as Pinterest, or you can go to your local DIY store and pick out colours and wallpapers that you think you would like.
There are also apps that allow you to decorate a room to see what it would look like in real life, so it might be worth giving something like this a go as well so you have a real feel when it comes to a home decor switch.
If you’re looking for a bit of modern in your life, then decor is the best way to achieve it. All you need to do is think about what the current trends are. If you follow any decor Instagram pages (hint: follow mine), you’ll be filled with inspiration. As a rule, modern is all about simple and slightly darker colours, with simple accessories.
The more minimalistic you make a room look, the better it’s going to feel. Typically, light colours light light grey, white, creams, and browns seem to mix together well, and give that homely feel in the living room.
Don’t Delay The Job
Finally, you shouldn’t delay you decor job. We know that it can be a pain to sort, but the last thing you want to do is put it off so that you’re stuck with decor that you hate for months. Once it’s done, it’s done for a year or more. So find a weekend to make yourself free, and smash it out of the park. If you enlist the help of a parent (or child!) as well, the job will be done in no time!
