A beautiful modern bedroom with wardrobes you wouldn't know were there. They have a groove for a handle and match the rest of the room

How to design your wardrobe doors

Design wardrobe doors? Who knew they needed designing? Well as it turns out, bad design can impact you in more ways than one.

We have these wardrobe doors in our bedroom currently, and no matter what angle I stand at, I can’t see from my calves to my feet. Which means when I’m trying outfits on, I can literally never see what my shoes look like with my outfit.

I know there’s bigger problems to be had, but it winds me up so much and ultimately just comes down to terrible design.

Whether you have a large built-in wardrobe or a smaller fitted space, the doors are the first thing you notice. So you want to get the design right.

With the right style, finish, and hardware, you can completely change how your bedroom feels without a full renovation.

First, understand how wardrobe doors shape a room

Wardrobe doors are more than a cover for storage.

They influence how light moves through the room, how colours interact, and even how spacious the room feels. Glossy doors reflect light and make small bedrooms appear brighter. In contrast, matt finishes create a softer, more calming effect that suits minimalist or natural interiors.

Your choice of material and finish can subtly shift the mood of the space. For example, painted doors in neutral tones like white, cream, or pebble grey give a timeless and clean appearance.

Woodgrain designs add warmth and texture, bringing a sense of comfort to the room. A wardrobe door can blend in quietly with your walls or stand out as a stylish feature that draws attention.

Should you choose a modern or classic style?

When it comes to style, it really depends on the look you’re after. Modern wardrobe doors tend to be sleek and simple, often with flat panels and clean lines. Pair them with chrome or brushed steel handles, and you’ve got a room that feels polished and contemporary.

If your style leans traditional, shaker doors or raised panel designs are a lovely choice. They have more character and depth, which works beautifully alongside painted furniture, vintage accents, or more ornate decor.

You can also mix the two styles. A shaker-style door in a soft matt finish with minimalist handles is a perfect way to bridge classic and modern elements. The key is consistency. Keep colours and hardware in harmony with the rest of your room to make everything feel cohesive.

What finishes and colours should you choose?

When it comes to finishes for your new wardrobe doors, you have a wide range of options.

Matte doors are versatile and practical, especially in family bedrooms (MUCH easier to maintain and less likely to show fingerprints). Glossy finishes, meanwhile, reflect light beautifully, making them ideal for smaller or darker rooms.

Neutral shades are a safe bet because they play nicely with bedding, flooring, and wall colours. Whites and greys feel modern and bright, while taupes and soft beiges add warmth. But don’t shy away from a bold choice. Deep navy or forest green doors can inject personality and richness into a space, particularly if you balance them with lighter walls.

If a natural, timeless feel is your thing, woodgrain finishes are always a winner. Oak, walnut, or light ash look elegant and complement a wide variety of interiors, from rustic cottages to Scandinavian-inspired bedrooms.

Choosing the handles for your wardrobe

Handles may seem like a tiny detail, but trust me, they make a big difference. Sleek bar handles instantly modernise a space, while round knobs or cup handles suit more traditional rooms. Handleless doors are also growing in popularity for anyone after a really streamlined look.

It’s worth thinking about the finish of your handles, too. Brushed steel or chrome pairs beautifully with glossy doors, while black or bronze can create a striking contrast against lighter matt finishes.

And if you match your handles with other room elements, like light fittings, side tables, or even picture frames, it all feels pulled together.

I’d love to replace the simple handles on our wardrobes, and I think it would make all the difference to the room!

How to coordinate your wardrobes with your existing decor

When updating your wardrobe doors, look at the room as a whole. If you’ve got soft tones and natural materials, doors in a similar finish will feel harmonious. For a more dramatic effect, try contrasting your wardrobes with bold walls or patterned wallpaper.

Lighting makes a huge difference, too. Glossy doors catch reflections from lamps and ceiling lights, while matt doors diffuse light for a gentler, more relaxed glow. Pair the right finish with your lighting, and suddenly even a simple wardrobe can become a feature.

Refresh your bedroom without replacing furniture

The best part? You don’t need to splash out on a whole new bedroom to make a difference. Replacing your wardrobe doors is a simple, cost-effective way to refresh your space. A new finish, updated handles, or a few mirrored panels can completely transform the feel of the room.

Whether you prefer a calm, neutral retreat or something with a bit more character, your wardrobe doors set the tone. With so many styles, colours, and finishes available, there’s a combination out there that’s just right for you and your dream bedroom.
