I don’t know about anyone else, but the quality of my sleep has been significantly altered in the last few months. With the stress of moving house, lockdown and the worry of a pandemic amongst other things, I find myself waking up more in the night, tossing and turning, unable to get some zzzs.
We’ve been trying all sorts of things to help us sleep better, like going for walks, reading before bed, spraying the pillow with sleep spray, meditating using an app. While each of these things do work, especially the meditation which we’ve found to really help us, something we wanted to try was an aromatherapy diffuser.
What do aroma diffusers do?
Aroma diffusers spray a very fine mist into the air that’s a combination of water and essential oils. These essential, or aromatherapy, oils have all sorts of benefits. They can act as a decongestant and disinfectant, and help to stimulate the olfactory system (the bit of the brain that’s connected to smell).
Robert and Tamsyn, the founders of Smellacloud, believe that relaxation is the key to so much. It helps us to be more focused, productive, healthy and intelligent, and this is the reason Smellacloud was created.
You simply fill the diffuser with water from the measuring cup provided, then add a few drops of essential oils. I have two oil selections – eucalyptus and sage.
The diffuser has three settings – 2 hours, 4 hours and 8 hours. By pressing the button on the front of the device, you can set the diffuser for a set amount of time.
On the 2 and 4 hour setting, the diffuser is on constantly during those time periods. When the 8 hour setting is activated, the system runs a programme that makes the diffuser come on for 3 minutes and go off for 3 minutes. This is great during the night, and me and my husband find the sound of the diffuser really calming when it comes on. The diffuser has various light settings – it can change colour or be set to just one, and the light can be turned off altogether, which is what we tend to do at night.
We have the Smellacloud aroma diffuser Nimbus 2.0, and this comes in various colours, including light green and dark wood. I chose the light wood version as I thought it would go nicely against our dark blue walls.
Possibly my only negative thought about the Smellacloud is that the buttons are on the front (as you can see in the image above). The charger plugs in at the back and so there’s really only one way that it can face. I feel like this makes it look like an electronic diffuser rather than a decorative vase or something, and think the buttons would be better suited hidden at the back of the device. But this is only a small superficial criticism.
What do you put in an aroma diffuser?
I chose the sage and eucalyptus essential oils for the diffuser. If you wanted it to work simply as a humidifier, you could just fill it with fresh water. However, the oils are what give the diffuser its power! Other essential oil smells include lemon, forest walk, tea tree, tangerine, cinnamon, orange and peppermint. I think we’ll definitely be investing in some fresh scents and will probably switch them depending on the time of year. Cinnamon and orange would be so good around Christmas.

Can you leave an aroma diffuser on all night?
Most diffusers will have a timer setting so that the diffuser isn’t on all night, but turns off after a set amount of time. It’s probably safe to leave it on all night if your diffuser doesn’t have a time, and should have a safety setting that means it turns off when all the water has been used up.
For instance, the Smellacloud diffuser has an 8-hour setting that means every 3 minutes, the diffuser will come on for 3 minutes. But when the water runs out, it flashes red and automatically turns itself off before the 8 hours are up. I’ve found that, even on the 8-hour setting, the maximum amount of water you can put in only lasts around 6 hours.
Overall, I would absolutely recommend the Smellacloud to anyone who wants to get a relaxing night’s sleep and loves the smell of essential oils.
