When I found out I was pregnant, I was so excited to get started on the nursery. Even though we knew the baby wouldn’t sleep in there for a few months after being born, getting the space ready made me feel much more mentally prepared.
I like to plan ahead, especially when it comes to designing a new room. So of course I wouldn’t proceed without a mood board:
I knew from the start I didn’t want a pink or blue nursery depending on whether we were having a boy or a girl. I love neutrals and greens, and I had in my head from the get go that I wanted a woodland-themed nursery.
First, I found our beautiful mural from Photowall, called Forest Fun. It looked so peaceful and calming, I loved the colours and had visions of our baby pointing at the individual animals, calling them by their name. Once I’d picked this mural, everything else kind of fell into place so easily.
I knew we wanted carpet that was easy to keep clean but that also had similar colours to the mural. We chose a two-tone brown carpet that we actually had installed in our previous house. It was so practical, can be cleaned so easily, it was a no brainer. Plus I thought the colour kind of reflected a forest floor.
In terms of furniture, we had two existing chest of drawers that we wanted to partially upcycle, but that was it.
Decorating our woodland nursery
The first thing we did in this room was paint the walls and ceiling in our chosen paint colour. We used Lick’s paint in the colour Green 09. I was drawn to it because it was such a light green, the perfect shade to go with the mural.
And yes, we painted the ceiling and I’m so glad we did – instead of being a stark white, it now blends beautifully with the walls.
Once the painting was done, the mural went up. We didn’t wallpaper ourselves as I was terrified of messing up (and it’s not like ordinary paper where you can just cut another sheet – if I messed it up, the whole mural would be ruined).
When it came to the furniture, I knew I wanted a lot of light wood, so the cot is a light pine and the shelves are unstained/varnished.
We partially upcycled our chest of drawers. I say ‘partially’ because I gave them one light coat of cream paint so you can still see the wood grain through it. We also sanded the top to remove the existing orange varnish and again left it unstained/varnished, showcasing the light wood.
Finishing touches included her toy box, some shelving, a bookcase and of course a rocking chair so I have somewhere to nurse her in the night.
Ultimately, we wanted the nursery to be the most relaxing room for Hallie to go to sleep in, and I think we succeeded! The woodland theme was absolutely the right choice.
