3 ways to add colour to your autumn garden

Come autumn time, it’s all too easy for dropping temperatures to make us spend less time outside. But this is a real shame, causing us to miss out on the many benefits of spending time in nature.

Making things extra colourful is a great way to convince you that it’s worth wrapping up in the latest autumn clothing and spending more time outdoors. There are loads of features you can use to create an autumnal haven filled with rich, deep colours. And we’ve written this article to share some of the best with you.

Keep reading for three ways to add colour to your garden this autumn.

Upgrade your plants

Plant some vibrant late-blooming flower varieties. For a pop of deep autumnal reds, golds and browns, you can choose some such as hibiscus, hydrangeas and chrysanthemums. Offset these with deep violet and blue varieties like fragrant sweet peas and violas. Heathers are my favourite for adding colour in autumn and winter!

Then round things off with green potted grasses, shrubs and small trees. These are ideal for autumn and winter growing thanks to their hardier natures. Both evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees offer bursts of vibrant colour as their leaves and foliage change from autumn into winter. Plants with gorgeous colourful foliage will add some brightness in the darker months, such as Japanese maples and burning bushes.

Consider plants with berries too, as these will flourish in winter. Winterberries, like holly, produce colourful berries in autumn, which can add visual interest. Certain fruit trees, like apple and pear trees can also add colour and provide you with fresh produce.

Finally, plant some spring bulbs ready for the following year. Tulips, daffodils and crocuses will all remain dormant through the winter and come out in spring.

Make the most of containers

Your pots and planters are just as important as what’s growing in them, and you can use them to add some gorgeous colour to your garden.

Go for neutral tones like terracotta that provide the perfect canvas for the more vibrant autumnal hues of the plants themselves. You can also choose brightly coloured containers for even more pop and dazzle.

If you’re going to go down this route, try to choose a container that is the opposite side of the colour wheel to the plant. For example, a green plant would look great in a pink/purple pot and an orangey plant would look best in a blue pot. Experiment with colour and see what makes you happy!

Get accessorising

The many items and objects in your garden don’t spring to mind when you think of colour, but you can set them to this purpose too. Use tables, chairs, cushions, throws, lights and more to add life and character to your garden. A few colourful accessories can help complement the colour scheme established through your plants and containers. Alternatively, you can select accessories in contrasting shades to give your outdoor space a more dramatic mood.

There’s no need for you to miss out on spending time in your garden this autumn. Use the features above to add rich, autumnal colours to your garden and transform it into a vibrant sanctuary you can’t get enough of.
