Interior Design Trends to Look Out For in 2020

Looking to mark the start of a new decade and give your home an overhaul in 2020?

Whether you’re planning a complete renovation, or just a few simple updates to your interior design, you might want to pay attention to the trends that are set to take-off this year. From statement colours to nature-inspired accents, here’s everything you need to know…

Sustainable Home Style

Consumption has been a major talking point over the past decade, and rightly so. The planet needs us to act fast, and there’s been a huge increase in individuals taking steps to become eco-friendlier, whether that be through ditching the single-use plastic, or seeking out more-sustainable options.

It doesn’t just stop at fast-fashion and plastic bags, with more and more consumers looking at all aspects of their lifestyle and considering the impact our choices have.

When it comes to the home, there are many ways you can improve the sustainability of your abode. From buying products created using recycled materials, to supporting local craftsmen and sourcing pre-loved furniture. It’s also worth looking out for accreditations such as FSC to ensure any timber bifold doors, front doors and other timber products, like internal doors, have been made using sustainably sourced wood.

Navy Statement Walls

Pantone hailed blue as their Colour of the Year for 2020, so it’s official, blue is the new grey! The colour that took the crown this year is ‘Classic Blue’ and does exactly what it says, offers both a classic and elegant feel. It’s the perfect shade for a feature wall, and looks beautiful dressed with a statement mirror or turned into a gallery.

You may have already noticed an influx of blue walls on Instagram, and I suspect many more to come. Sorry grey, you’ve served us well and I still think you’re great but it’s time for blue to take over for a while…

Bringing Nature Inside

Think understated, Scandinavian-style with warm tones and natural materials. This rustic charm is set to be huge in the world of interiors for 2020, turning away from cool colour palettes and looking towards earthy tones such as oatmeal, burnt orange and Dulux’s ‘Colour of the Year’ Tranquil Dawn – a stunning soft green hue.

Invest in quality pieces such as a wooden chair or coffee table, scatter an assortment of house plants around your home and add warmth with accessories such as throws and cushions in shades that complement one another. Play around with textures, from chunky-knit throws to Berber-style rugs to complete the look.

Plaster-Effect Walls

Interior brick walls and exposed metalwork have been enduring trends over the past decade, with those looking to recreate that New York City loft apartment vibe. Now? It’s all about the plaster-effect. I have a suspicion Kim and Kanye might be responsible for this one.

If you’re not keen on the idea of simply living with raw plaster, but still want to take on this sandy-hued look for your walls, then Farrow and Ball’s ‘Setting Plaster’ shade might be an ideal option. A beautiful dusty pink colour that gives a nod to the look of a freshly plastered home. It’s the perfect neutral tone for both traditional and contemporary homes.

Dark Kitchen Units

Searches for black and navy blue kitchen units have skyrocketed over the past couple of years, and it’s a trend that looks set to explode in 2020. Whether it’s a contemporary-style concealed kitchen or a traditional shaker look, blue and black are the colours of the moment. Team with a wooden work-top and scaffold shelving with pots and pans on display for a rustic look.

Looking for something slick? A marble worktop looks beautiful with black and navy kitchen units, complete with gold handles for ultimate kitchen sophistication. C’est chic!

Thanks for sharing some fab trends to look out for in the coming year and decade – I always love this time of year for trying to guess what the rest of the year is going to be defined by. I couldn’t agree more that sustainability is going to be at the heart of the design world this year and I think this comes hand in hand with bringing nature back into the home – we’ve definitely seen this trend increasing in previous years with the rising popularity of natural and woody tones.
