7 tips for choosing the right gutter cleaning service

Cleaning your gutters is one of those tasks that you dread as a homeowner. I know my husband definitely does, as it’s a dangerous job if you don’t have all the right equipment. When you leave your gutters to clog up with leaves, debris and dirt, you’re basically asking for water damage, mould and damp, so it’s absolutely a job that should be done every year.

But ladders often don’t reach high enough, or if they do, they lean against the fascia, creating quite a large gap between the ladder and the gutter. Then there’s the added problem of trying to hold a bucket and the ladder, while scooping stuff out. You basically need three hands.

To save all this faff, you’ll probably decide, like we did, to get in someone who knows what they’re doing. Below, I’ve run through the 7 key things we looked at when hiring a gutter cleaning company.

1. Figure out what you need

Before getting in touch with a few companies, first consider what you need from them. To give you an accurate quote, they’ll need information like the size and type of property, the number of gutters, etc. Location can also make a difference to a quote.

Additionally, consider any specific requirements you have, such as the use of eco-friendly products or the need for repairs. Determining your needs will help you to narrow down your options and find a service that meets all your expectations.

2. Research some local companies

Once you’ve thought about what you require from a gutter cleaner, it’s time to start finding some companies in your local area.

Start by asking for recommendations from friends, family, or neighbours who have recently used such services. This is what we did and we found the best window cleaners in Chester, Abbey Windows. They do our windows once a month and our gutters once a year. They brought a bunch of flowers over when I had a baby and always put a Christmas card through the door. I can’t fault them, and I only knew about them because my parents use them!

The experiences of your friends and family can provide valuable insights and help you to make an informed decision.

You can also check online directories or review websites to find reputable providers in your area. Look for companies with positive reviews and a good reputation for quality service.

3. Check for proper licencing and insurance

When hiring a gutter cleaning service in the UK, it’s crucial that the company you choose is properly licensed and insured.

A reputable provider will have the necessary licences and certifications to operate legally. Ask potential companies for proof of licencing and verify their details with the relevant authorities. Additionally, ask about their insurance coverage to protect yourself from any liability in case of accidents or damages during the cleaning process.

4. Consider experience and expertise

When you’re comparing different companies, you might want to take experience and expertise into account.

Look for companies that have been in the industry for several years and have a successful track record. An experienced service provider will have the necessary skills and knowledge to handle various gutter cleaning tasks efficiently. They will also be familiar with different types of gutters and any potential issues that may arise.

5. Ask about their methods and equipment

It’s important to inquire about the cleaning methods and equipment used by the gutter cleaning service.

Many companies avoid the use of ladders and instead using suction devices. This means your gutters can be cleaned from the ground, without the use of scaffolding, and is much faster. All the leaves, moss and debris that has collected is sucked up into a separate container.

You may have the option of disposing of the debris yourself or paying a little bit extra to have it taken away.

I’d recommend that you avoid companies that rely solely on pressure washers, as they can potentially damage your gutters.

6. Request a quote

Price is probably going to be an important factor to help you make a decision. You don’t want to choose a company that’s charging £50 more than another for the exact same task.

Get multiple quotes from a few different companies to get the best one. The quotes should include a breakdown of the services offered, the expected duration of the job and the total cost.

Do keep in mind, though, the cheapest quote may not always be the best option. This does depend on how much cheaper it is, but if most of your quotes are for £60 and one is for £20, you’d have to ask yourself why. Look for a good balance between quality and affordability.

7. Ask for references

If you found a gutter cleaning company via a brochure, website or directory, it’s important to get some references before hiring them. This will allow you to gauge the quality of their work, what their other clients think of them, etc.

Contact the references and inquire about their experiences with the company. This will give you a better understanding of the service provider’s professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail. If possible, request before and after photos of previous gutter cleaning projects to assess the quality of their work.

Choosing the right gutter cleaning service is crucial if you want to keep those gutters clean and functional. When you do, there will be a reduced risk of water damage, damp and mould in your property, so it’s definitely a job to keep on top of! I hope you can use my seven tips above to help you find someone that can do the job for you.
