Whether you love gardening, or hate it (like me) simple gardening is the way forwards using technology to turn you into a green thumb!
If you’re an avid gardener, the chances are you’re always looking for ways to improve how your garden looks and develops.
An effective way of making sure your plants, seeds and shrubs stay healthy and live long is by introducing the latest innovations. But which will help you the most?
To discover which technology you need, read this guide by Suttons — leading suppliers of evergreen shrubs — as we explore the top must-have technology for gardeners in 2018…
There seems to be an app for everything these days, but did you know there’s a selection specifically for gardening, too? An app will make simple gardening a reality. Here are two of the best ones:
- Garden Compass: upload photos, ask questions to horticultural experts and create a personalised garden-care calendar.
- GrowIt!: connect with local gardeners, upload photos of your plants and share your knowledge with others.
Increase your produce range
The climate of the UK isn’t necessarily the best for growing a wide variety of produce. But there’s a solution! If you want to grow something more exotic, you can invest in a heated propagator.
A heated propagator allows seeds to germinate earlier and more successfully (meaning that less goes to waste). This isn’t necessarily a new idea. Years ago, it was heated greenhouses and heated benches that were on the market. But, they can add to your energy costs as the heat can quickly dissipate and therefore must be on all the time to be successful. Instead, the propagator has walls and a lid which can retain the warmth.
The best thing about a heated propagator, is that you can enjoy a growing temperature of up to 30°C. This is excellent if you want to grow more exotic seeds. Thanks to the light that is installed in each product, seedlings can grow healthily in a high output/low energy environment. This is because the propagator contains a reflector that can mirror lost light and diffuse light deep into plant leaves. Being able to grow from seed is more cost-effective than buying an already germinated young plant too — another bonus!
Monitor the health of your garden
Do you have concerns about the health of your plants and whether they’re getting enough nutrients day by day? There is one gadget that can help you with simple gardening — the Parrot Flower Power plant monitor. With a battery life of half a year and up to 7,000 plants in its database, this device is extremely handy.
All you have to do is put this gadget in the soil next to whatever you want to monitor. It’ll start to detect sunlight, temperature and fertilizer. This information is then sent to your smartphone, so you know when to water or add more fertilizer to your plants. I think even this gadget would be fool proof against me.
Share your gardening success with the world!
If gardening is a hobby for you, why not combine it with another: photography? Often the beauty of the plant is in the detail of its leaves. Or perhaps you enjoy watching the wildlife in the garden. Either way, to take the best photos in the garden you should invest in an Olloclip Pro Lens.
By placing this gadget over the lens of your smartphone, it will combine with your phone’s digital zoom and allow you to take photos with up to 100x magnification! It’s ideal for capturing the details that aren’t visible to the human eye or even monitoring insects as they enjoy your garden. You’re guaranteed to get some wonderful shots without the need for purchasing a professional camera.
Develop your watering system for a better, healthier garden
Sometimes, we can’t always be around to regularly water our plants, which might mean they aren’t receiving the fluid they need to develop. If this is the case for you, invest in a watering kit.
These can water up to 25 plants automatically and can even sense what time of day it is. You can set up the gadget so that it slowly releases water to the root of the plant which will save you the effort! Connect it to your outdoor garden tap for even less hassle and keep your plants and hanging baskets going strong.
Me and Jay are working on transforming our garden. But it’s been hard work because it’s so overgrown, and I’m not the biggest fan of gardening. However, simple gardening is something I absolutely need, and these tools make it so simple. Browse the internet for these gadgets and improve the health and beauty of your garden today!
