10 ways to keep your home and garden clutter free this summer
Summer is an amazing time to enjoy the sunshine and invite friends over for a Sunday roast.
However, with the longer days and warmer weather also comes a little extra mess. Before you know it, garden toys, BBQ bits and everyday clutter can start taking over your space. The good news is that with a few small changes, you can keep things under control. These simple, practical tips are here to help you keep your home and garden tidy, so you can focus on making the most of the sunshine.
1. Rotate your seasonal storage
One of the easiest ways to keep your home clutter-free during the summer is to put away anything you won’t be needing for a while, like your heavy blankets, winter coats and boots. Use vacuum-sealed bags to save space and store them somewhere out of the way, like under the bed or in the loft. Swapping these out for fans, picnic bits and lighter bedding instantly makes your space feel more open and ready for the warmer months.
It’s also a good time to spot anything you no longer use and decide whether it’s worth keeping.
2. Create a garden zoning system
Dividing your garden into clear zones can make it feel much more organised and enjoyable to use.
Set up a dedicated spot for tools, maybe with a small shed or storage box. Keep seating areas separate so they stay tidy and relaxing, and group plants or veg beds together to make watering and maintenance easier.
If you have kids, make sure to create a play zone as it helps keep toys from spreading everywhere. A simple layout like this means everything has its place, which makes your outdoor space feel calmer and easier to keep on top of all summer long.
3. Use vertical storage outside
If your shed is feeling cramped, try using the walls to your advantage. For example, wall-mounted hooks, racks, or shelves are perfect for keeping tools and garden accessories off the floor and neatly in place. It’s especially useful in smaller gardens where every bit of storage counts. In addition to that, having everything off the ground helps protect your items from pests.
4. Tidy up after every BBQ
Summer get-togethers are great, but the mess can pile up fast. This is why I would suggest that you keep a few storage baskets for essentials like plates, napkins, cutlery, and condiments. When the party winds down, you can simply pop everything back in and carry it inside or into the shed. This saves time as well as keeps your garden clutter-free.
A quick tidy after each BBQ means you’ll always be ready for the next sunny weekend.
5. Clear out the shed early
It’s quite easy for sheds to turn into storage black holes over the colder months.
Get ahead this summer by giving yours a proper clear-out before the season kicks off. Take everything out, sort what you actually use, and get rid of what’s broken or forgotten. If it’s piled high and feels like too much to handle alone, bringing in an experienced shed clearance company can make things a lot easier. They’ll handle the heavy lifting and dispose of everything properly, leaving you with a fresh, usable space just in time for summer.
6. Keep the kids’ summer gear in check
When the sun’s out, kids are in and out of the garden all day long. So, in order to avoid garden toys and paddling pool bits being scattered everywhere, try using stackable storage bins. These help keep everything in one place and make the most of your space.
Labelling each bin with pictures or words (depending on their age) can also turn tidy-up time into a fun task for them. It encourages good habits and keeps your outdoor space looking neat in the process.
7. Designate a drop zone inside
Summer can get a bit hectic with everyone in and out all day, so we recommend setting up a small area by the door for everyday essentials. For instance, a tray works well for keeping things like keys, sunglasses, sunscreen and post together.
You could also add a basket for shoes to avoid hallway clutter. It’s a simple way to stay organised during busy days and helps make those quick dashes out the door a lot smoother.
8. Stick to a 10-minute rule
Set aside 10 minutes at the end of each day to give your home and garden a quick tidy. It doesn’t have to be a deep clean, simply a quick reset. Put toys back in bins, bring in any washing from the line, tidy cushions, and clear surfaces.
Doing this little and often keeps mess from building up, so your home and garden stay looking fresh throughout summer. It’s much easier than letting it pile up and having to tackle it all at once. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.
9. Upcycle or donate unused items
Summer is a great time to take stock of what’s gathering dust in the garden. If you have old furniture, planters, or tools that you no longer use, think about upcycling them with a fresh coat of paint or a new purpose. It can be a fun project and a way to save money.
Alternatively, donate anything in good condition to a neighbour, charity shop, or local community garden. Clearing out what you no longer need creates more space and lets someone else enjoy and make use of those forgotten items.
I always have a charity box on the go, and it gets gradually filled up with items. Once it’s full, it goes to the charity shop, so I’m not always having to do a huge sort out every few years.
10. Prepare for travel without the mess
Everyone knows that getting ready for a holiday can quickly turn your home upside down. Things like travel bottles, bags and even accessories seem to end up everywhere. The best way to stay on top of it is to make a list before you start packing.
Once you’ve gathered everything, store it neatly in a suitcase or small storage box that can be tucked in the wardrobe. It keeps clutter out of sight and makes packing easier next time you’re heading off.
Remember, keeping your home and garden clutter-free doesn’t have to mean a full clear-out every week. A few daily habits and clever storage solutions can go a long way. Giving everything a proper place and doing a quick tidy at the end of the day creates a calm and welcoming space.
