5 simple upgrades to improve home security
Home should always be a sanctuary, somewhere you feel safe, comfortable and able to relax. But life gets busy (and expensive), and it can be easy for you to forget about things like home security. This is something that we’ve been thinking about recently, and about how to make our home a bit safer and more secure. After all, it houses all the items that are important and meaningful to you, including some of the most expensive things you’ve ever bought (jewellery, bikes, technology, etc).
Whether you’re thinking about a minor tweak or a bigger improvement to give you peace of mind at home, here are some of the upgrades I have made (or would love to make, hello roller garage door).
1. Invest in a good-quality garage door
Ever spent 10 minutes wrestling with your creaky garage door? I know I definitely have, in fact I try to avoid opening it on my own whenever possible because its so heavy. While this may actually be a great detterent for thieves, a modern garage door is going to be so much more secure.
Modern roller doors usually come with advanced locking systems, unlike our garage which seems fairly feeble in comparison. They neatly roll into a compact housing at the top of your garage, freeing up valuable headroom and making the space feel lighter and more open. With electric operation, opening and closing your garage becomes a one-button job, which is perfect when you’re juggling kids, pets or an armful of objects.
Upgrading to a roller garage door is something we’ve wanted to do for a loooonngg time, but unfortunately, it’s not a priority on our list for the time being (our 15-year-old boiler, however……).
2. Install a smart doorbell
I love our smart doorbell, and wouldn’t be without it now. We’re lucky that we live in a very quiet cul-de-sac with no through traffic or people, so it isn’t constantly alerting us to movement which is good.
Whether you’re in the kitchen, upstairs, or even away from home, a smart doorbell lets you check who’s calling in real time from your phone. Choose from options that have been tried and tested, and you’ll have a reliable system that lets you keep an eye on who’s coming and going (you can be THAT nosy neighbour).
For families, this upgrade adds an extra layer of security, letting you monitor deliveries, check on visitors, and feel in control without interrupting your day.

3. Upgrade to double or even triple-glazed windows
Windows do more than frame your view, they actually play a crucial role in your home’s energy efficiency, comfort, and security. Switching from single glazing to A-rated double glazing is one of the most effective improvements you can make.
Not only does double glazing make your property look smarter, but it also strengthens security and reduces energy loss. You can save up to £140 a year on energy bills by keeping heat in during the winter and out during the summer.
Double glazing also cuts down on noise from busy roads or neighbours, making your home feel calmer and more relaxing. And with improved insulation, your rooms stay cosy in winter and refreshingly cool in summer, which is a subtle, but life-changing (not to be over-emphatic) upgrade.
4. Add motion-sensor lighting outside
Another simple way to improve both security and convenience is with motion-sensor outdoor lighting. These lights automatically illuminate when movement is detected. Not only does it make returning home in the dark much safer, but it also gives would-be intruders pause, which is always a bonus.
LED options are energy-efficient and last a long time so you won’t have to worry about constant bulb replacements. Plus, they add a welcoming glow to your garden or driveway, making your home feel even more welcoming to you.
5. Install smart locks
I’m not sure if I’m entirely convinced by smart locks, as it feels like you’re allowing your home to be hacked, as has been done with smart doorbells, BUT some people do swear by them. No more fumbling for keys when your hands are full, or digging around in your handbag trying to find them. You can actually lock or unlock your doors via your phone or a secure code.
Forgot your key? No problem? Got someone coming to the house? You can create temporary codes or access for cleaners, tradespeople (if you trust them) and guests.
I’d suggest you do your research when purchasing a smart lock to ensure the one you’re getting is really secure and can’t be hacked or accessed remotely.
Making your home safer and easier to live in doesn’t need to be complicated or costly. Simple, practical upgrades, like upgrading to a roller garage door, installing a smart doorbell, or fitting double-glazed windows, can really help.
