Is laminate flooring a good choice for your home?

Laminate flooring has been a popular choice among homeowners in recent years, mainly due to its versatility, durability and affordability. With a wide range of designs available, you can choose a laminate floor that mimicks the sophistication of natural wood grains, the elegance of stone, and the sleek look of tile.

Whether you prefer the warm, homely feel of oak or the refined appearance of marble, there are tons of laminate flooring choices that can suit your personal style and enhance any room in your home.

If you’re still undecided whether this is the right floor for you, I’ve come up with 10 pros of laminate flooring. Hopefully I can convince you that it’s just the thing you’re looking for, whether you’re redesigning a lounge, kitchen, bathroom or bedroom.

What are the pros of laminate flooring?

1. Aesthetic appeal

One of the most compelling reasons to choose laminate flooring is its exceptional aesthetic appeal.

This kind of flooring is made to mimic the look of natural materials like hardwood, stone and tile, providing a luxurious appearance without the associated high costs. With so many designs, colours and patterns on offer, you’ll almost certainly find something that matches your unique taste and the rest of your home decor.

Whether you’re looking to create a rustic, cosy space with rich, dark wood tones, or a contemporary, minimalist look with light, sleek finishes, laminate flooring can cater to your vision.

2. Durability and longevity

Another reason why people opt for laminate flooring is its renowned durability. Unlike other materials, particularly real wood or lino, laminate is quite durable and won’t scratch, fade or stain easily. This makes it particularly useful in high-traffic areas like living rooms, kitchens and hallways. Plus it’s far more hygienic in these spaces than carpet, which can hold onto bacteria and stains easily.

3. Easy installation

Many people who are redecorating on a budget will choose laminate floor because of how easy it is to install, without the need for a professional.

This type of flooring comes with a click-lock system, whereby you interlock each plank to the one next to it. With no glue or adhesive required, it’s the perfect floor for do-it-yourself enthusiasts (like me) who want to install a floor within a day.

4. Low maintenance

We all want a flooring solution that makes our lives easier, and laminate flooring can do just that.

Carpets need regular hoovering and even shampooing to keep looking their best. Or you can try the popular TikTok hack where you use a squeegee to brush up the excess pet hair and dust (very satisfying to watch, by the way).

Even hard wood floors get scratched and dented and may need resanding/oiling every now and then.

But caring for laminate floors is easy, involving only sweeping and, occasionally, damp wiping to ensure that they stay clean. Laminate doesn’t need any special treatments or refinishing like hardwood or carpet either, which is a plus for any family that is always busy.

5. Affordability

Laminate flooring is cheaper than other types of floors, like hard wood, mainly because its production process is more cost effective. The manufacturers are able to produce such flooring at lower prices, and therefore the sale price is cheaper too. This makes it particularly popular for very large spaces or rooms, where you may need to cover a large surface area.

It also doesn’t require expensive treatments or refinishing, meaning you can save money long after your flooring is installed too.

6. Water resistant

Laminate flooring isn’t 100% waterproof, but then neither are most floors. Hard wood and luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) can both swell when exposed to water. The only truly water-resistant floor is stone, but this can be pricey to both purchase and install.

Laminate is, however, made with a water-resistant feature that helps to prevent water damage from spills, etc. On the packaging, you’ll notice that there is sometimes a water droplet symbol, signalling that it’s ideal for made for more water-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Not all laminate has this feature, however, so do be cautious if you’re purchasing for rooms like these.

To keep your floor looking in great condition, any large spills should be mopped up quickly.

7. Allergy-friendly

For people with allergies to dust, pet hair or other allergens, laminate flooring is likely one of the best choices.

Carpet holds onto dust and dander, whereas laminate has a smooth surface that is easy to sweep and clean, and won’t accumulate dirt.

Additionally, laminate flooring often has antimicrobial properties, further preventing the build-up of allergens. By choosing laminate, allergy sufferers can enjoy a cleaner, more hygienic living space with improved air quality.

8. Environmental sustainability

I’m sure many of us are aware of the environmental impacts our home upgrades can have, and if you’re like me, you want to select a product that is environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Well, you’ll be glad to hear that lots of the laminate products on the market today are environmentally friendly and follow strict emission standards and sustainable practices when in production. They’re generally made using recycled wood fibers and other natural resources, reducing the need for virgin materials, as is the case with hard wood.

The production process itself often has a lower environmental impact compared to traditional hardwood too, as it uses less energy and produces less waste. Additionally, laminate flooring is free from harmful chemicals and emissions, contributing to better indoor air quality.

9. Versatility

Laminate flooring is one of the most versatile home products you can buy. It can be used in both residential and commercial spaces and is adaptable to various environments.

Its robust construction and design flexibility make it suitable for virtually any room in your home, from bedrooms to bathrooms.

10. Resale value

Did you know that investing in laminate flooring can boost the resale value of your home? Potential buyers appreciate the durability, aesthetic appeal and low maintenance requirements of laminate, making your property more attractive in the competitive real estate market.

It’s worth noting, however, that it may not offer as much value as other high-end materials that are sought after, such as hard wood or natural stone flooring.

So there you have my 10 pros of laminate flooring. It continues to be a popular choice among homeowners for its blend of affordability, durability and aesthetic versatility.

Whether you’re renovating your entire home or updating a single room, laminate flooring offers numerous benefits that enhance both the look and functionality of your living space.
