Creating a Boho Home

Boho might be a style that you’ve heard of, but you might not necessarily know where it came from or what a boho home really includes. I’m here to answer your questions!

The boho style is actually a little confusing, as it’s a fusion of various time eras and styles. It takes on a mixture of retro 60s/70s and Moroccan colours and patterns. The focus is definitely on soft furnishings which are used in abundance to add as much contrasting colour and pattern as possible. But the good thing about boho decor is that you can mix old and new, styles and trends, and it won’t look out of place.

Here’s how you can achieve the boho look in your own home.

 

Furniture

As I mentioned above, a boho style is all about softening a room. Rather than going for a mid-century style sofa, choose something with softer edges that’s quite deep and made from a plush material.

Hanging chairs definitely give off the relaxed, hippy style that is Boho. You could go for cacoon hanging chairs, or hanging chairs with stands like below (which are personally my favourite!).

This one above ticks all the boxes when it comes to deep, well-cushioned seating.

When it comes to other pieces of furniture in your home, you could use lots of second-hand pieces in a range of colours, and use Moroccan style pouffes and rugs to bring in lots of colour. I love the layout below, and would work perfectly in the corner of a living area!

 

Natural Decor

Boho is a slightly ‘hippy’ style, in that it’s about embracing the environment and bringing the outside in. So, you should bring as many natural elements into your home as possible, including plants, rattan, and fibres such as macrame or crochet.

You could add woven art to the walls, instead of using traditional framed pieces or canvases. A boho home is all about being eclectic so don’t be afraid to mix lots of different types of artwork together.

Plants are absolutely a must. You can use hanging plants in macrame hangers to combine two natural elements together.

Add Cultural Accents

Boho culture has a history of celebrating the weird and wonderful from all over the world. This is why cultural accents are such a big part of a boho home. Items such as Buddha statues, Moroccan lanterns (pictured further up), Indian tribal prints, and Ming-style vases are all part of achieving this global look.
