How to use matte black home accessories

I love an inspirational mood board, and so I decided to create one for a trend I can see kicking off in 2019: matte black home accessories.

I’ll be the first to hold my hand up and say I struggle to keep up with trends.

Dark walls have taken over everyone’s Instagram grids and Pinterest boards, but by the time I come to actually paint my bedroom, the trend will have probably moved onto white walls, or tropical print, or marble effect, or something else entirely.

I won’t change all my taps to rose gold just because it’s the popular colour for that year. How on earth can anyone keep up?

The trick is, and always has been, to incorporate these trends in the smaller details of your home, i.e. the cheaper details. It’s much easier to replace a glass vase for a rose-gold one, a white candle for a marble one, without spending too much money.

Matte black home accessories are something we’re beginning to see much more of. The trend has been lingering for a couple of years, but I still don’t think it’s taken off as much as it has the potential to.

It’s a versatile albeit a daring look, and probably isn’t to everyone’s tastes.

However, with the continued popularity of the white kitchen, what goes better with white than black? Here’s how you can use black matte home accessories in a way that’s modern, stylish, and effective.

 

Plumbing

Taps, sinks, and even bathtubs are the best way to incorporate matte black home accessories, though don’t try to go black on all of those items at once.

The whole idea is that it’s a statement. You want one or two pieces to stand out, not make the entire room black.

It’s advisable to mix up your other materials in the room as well. As above, the black taps will go gorgeously with marble, as well as wood or glass. You’ll find they’re incredibly versatile.

You’ll also find that you can mix metals with matt black. Chrome, gold, and rose-gold will all match with it, so have an experiment and see which pairing you prefer.

Also included under the category of ‘plumbing’ is your radiators. Who said they have to be white?

 

Lighting

I absolutely adore black lights. I love the juxtaposition between the dark shade and the light emitting from the bulb. Many would say what’s the point in having a light with a dark shade that actually doesn’t let much light through, but that is the point. It’s a statement, a bold piece.

I just love everything about the above image. There’s more white used than black, but the black door and window frames add so much drama without taking over the room. Also note how they’ve alternated white and black stools to add some variety.

 

General Decor

If you’re scared to make a big change like a radiator or statement light, you can tone the matte black theme down a little.
